Before you install
Permits, rebates and who can do the work
Why the installation matters
Technical Safety BC says installing an EV charger without a permit puts your vehicle, home, building and property at risk, and that a permit is required for most installations. It also warns that an unpermitted installation may lead to enforcement action or issues with home insurance.
Permits and rebates
A permit is required for most EV charger installations in BC. TSBC notes that some rebate programs from BC Hydro, FortisBC and CleanBC require a valid permit to qualify. Rebate programs change, so check the current terms with the program before you buy.
Homes, strata and businesses
Owners of a strata unit, a non-strata duplex, and people operating a business from their home cannot get a homeowner permit and must hire a licensed contractor. Strata bylaws and local rules may add requirements.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a permit to install an EV charger in BC?
Yes. Technical Safety BC says a permit is legally required for most EV charger installations in BC, and installing without one may lead to enforcement action or home insurance issues.
Can I install an EV charger myself?
Possibly. TSBC may issue a homeowner electrical permit for an EV charger in a fully detached dwelling. Owners of strata units and non-strata duplexes and people who run a business from home must hire a licensed contractor. TSBC recommends using a licensed contractor experienced with EV charging.
Will my electrical panel handle an EV charger?
It depends on your service size and existing loads. A licensed contractor should verify and test that your electrical system can handle the added load before installation.
How long does it take to charge with a Level 2 charger?
Technical Safety BC says a Level 2 charger usually takes 6 to 14 hours to fully charge a battery. A Level 1 charger on a 120V outlet usually takes about 12 to 20 hours.
