Safety first

If you smell burning, see scorch marks, or an outlet or panel is hot to the touch, turn off the affected power if it is safe to do so and call an electrician. If there is a fire or someone is in danger, call 911.

Permits for repairs

Some repairs do not need a permit. BC's Electrical Safety Regulation says a permit is not required if a licensed electrical contractor repairs components of existing installed and certified regulated electrical equipment, subject to conditions. Replacing existing switches, receptacles or thermostats does not need a permit when a licensed contractor does it. Larger repairs and new circuits do. We will tell you what applies to your job.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Why does my breaker keep tripping?

A breaker trips when a circuit is overloaded, shorted or has a fault. The cause needs to be found by an electrician, because repeatedly resetting a breaker can hide a safety problem.

Do electrical repairs need a permit in BC?

Some do not. Under BC's Electrical Safety Regulation, a licensed contractor repairing components of existing certified equipment may not need a permit if certain conditions are met, and replacing existing switches, receptacles or thermostats does not need one. New circuits and larger changes do.
